The Ice Man Cometh..

We had a major ice storm today in Vermont with trees down in our driveway and the road impassable because of ice.  I took advantage of it--after I got over the sound of cracking trees--to go out with my tripod to see what I could see. All these photos were taken in close proximity to my house.

Movement and Stillness in Nature

I put together a ten page portfolio of movement and stillness in nature and want to continue with this theme. The movement photos were done through moving the camera as the shutter was released.
Here is what I have so far.

Movement Photos

My assignment this week was to capture movement.  Since I do not like the usual ways of capturing it: sport movement, twirling, lights at night, etc., I concentrated on panning inanimate objects and stopping the flow of water in unusual ways.  Here are some of the results of that process, and one traditional capture of a bird in flight that I changed in Photoshop!

The Beauty of Decay

To go along with my upcoming show on the Season of Transition, I decided to take macro photos of what is now on my land. These are the ones I truly liked, and now I wish I had time to print and include them in the show:

Using the Rule of Thirds

One rule of thumb for taking good photos is the rule of thirds:
The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. As follows.

First of all, imagine that your picture space is divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically, like a tic tac toe grid.
photography rule of thirds

The photography rule of thirds tells us to align our subject with one of the points where those lines cross. That means our subject is one third of the way “into” the picture space – from either the top or bottom, and from either the left or right. And that means it’s not in the middle. Of course rules are made to be broken--so remember your photos are YOURS to make.

Here are some of my photos using the rule of thirds.

Fall is well on the way to peak in Vermont so I've been practicing taking photos in anticipation.  Here are a few samples with attempts to capture all sorts of light--cool, warm, harsh and soft.  Plus back light, front light and side light.  So many options!
