Transient Patterns in Nature

I love the concept of simplicity and form in photography, particularly when the
final product has qualities of the abstract.  The standard definition of abstract in
the world of art is to make reality unrecognizable. A broader concept might
be to represent the subject, not as unrecognizable, but simply in a non-literal
manner.
Even though I know that many of my waking hours are spent outdoors, I am
always surprised that the natural world pulls me so strongly in my work. This
project follows that propensity.
After experimenting with different views of water as subject, my project came
together while walking in the woods one frosty morning in November.
From there it was a simple step to becoming conscious to the myriad patterns in
nature and to photographing some that might easily go unnoticed and soon
disappear.

In case you are wondering--these are all patterns in ice, taken on two separate days. They no longer exist except in my photos!

Dancing with bread at Elmore Mountain Bread

I arrived at 6 AM to do a photo shoot of a bread baking day at Elmore Mountain Bread, a small home based bakery that works out of an attached space that includes a wood fired oven.  Andrew, the co-owner had been working since 4 AM.  The movement of the three, Andrew, Blair, co-owner and married to Andrew, and their well-appreciated helper, Kate was so quick that I had to figure out how not to get only blur in the photos. Their work looked like a well coordinated dance as they folded and shaped dough, floured and oiled loaves, baked using a conveyor belt that loaded the wood-fired oven, and packaged the freshly made bread for delivery. All without even touching each other.  I finished at 1:30.  They still needed to do deliveries!
